Will treatment be painful?
No. During the appointment, sufficient anesthesia will be used to ensure that you're comfortable. You can expect to experience soreness after the procedure. "Pain killers," such as anti-¬inflammatory medications and analgesics will be prescribed. If needed, antibiotics will be prescribed also.
If the tooth has no nerves, how can it be sore afterwards?
Although the tooth has no nerves, the ligaments and bone around the tooth have nerves and they can be sore. It's just like any other part of the body.
How can the tooth stay in my mouth if it's "dead?"
The bone and periodontal tissues around the tooth are very much alive. They keep the tooth in place.
Should I avoid chewing on that side?
Yes, for a while, you should avoid chewing at the site of the root canal to give the tooth some rest. Invariably, however, food will go on that side.
What should I avoid?
You can take good care of the treated area by completely avoiding popcorn, nuts, hard candy, etc. Anything that you think can crack the tooth should be avoided. If you're not sure, avoid it.
Once the root canal therapy is complete, am I done?
After your root canal therapy, it is very important that you return to your dentist as soon as possible for a permanent restoration (a filling or, a crown). This prevents food and bacteria from contaminating the root canals and protects the tooth from fracture.
